Native to California, Mexico, and Central America, yerba santa, whose name translates as “holy herb” in Spanish, has a long history of medicinal use by Native American tribes.
It is best known for its ability to treat respiratory conditions, including asthma, colds, bronchitis, and general lung congestion. It is also useful for treating poison oak rashes and healing wounds by chewing the leaves and applying them to cuts and scrapes.
Native Americans also used to chew the leaves to help prevent dehydration.
As a smudge stick, Yerba Santa helps to purify the environment in preparation and during sacred rituals.
