There are two popular varieties of quince. Chinese quince, Fructus Chaenomelis Lagenariae, is native to Asia and Pseudocydonia sinensis is the variety popular in the West. Both varieties have similar properties and are enjoyed as a food and medicine that can be used internally and externally. Chinese quince is used internally to treat digestive issues, relieve arthritic pain, and swelling and cramping of the calves and lower legs. Externally, it is used to treat injuries, cuts, and as a softener for the skin. The variety of quince used in the West, Pseudocydonia sinensis, has demulcent, astringent, and antidiarrheal properties. Its seeds are very mucilaginous.
