There are over 300 varieties of asparagus! There are three types of wild asparagus– Western: A. acutifolius L., and Eastern: Asparagus cochinchinensis (A.K.A. Tian Men Dong used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and A. racemosus (A.K.A Shatavari (“She who has a thousand husbands”), used in Ayurvedic medicine.

Do not confuse typically store-bought asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) with wild asparagus (A. acutifolius L.) or Chinese asparagus (Asparagus cochinchinensis/Tian Men Dong) or A. racemosus (the variety used in Ayurvedic medicine, often called shatavari). All these varieties are also edible. The Chinese variety and the Ayurvedic genus share similar medicinal functions, and you will often see them confusingly referred to as the same herb; they are not, but they do have similar properties.

Here Are Three Lesser Known Facts About Wild Asparagus:

  1. The Chinese variety is less common and more expensive than the Ayurvedic. Both the Chinese and Ayurvedic roots contain compounds not found in common grocery store asparagus (as nutritious as it is!). Both varieties support fertility, boost the libido, and counter stress and mental agitation.
  2. Wild asparagus root has a long history as a female rejuvenative, with all generations of women using it. It is considered an excellent reproductive and sex tonic.
  3. Wild asparagus root has been found to induce interferon production in human beings. Interferon fights viral infections by inhibiting virus replication.
