Holy basil, aka Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum), not to be confused with sweet basil, aka basil (Ocimum basilicum), is a healing plant with a long tradition of use in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Mediterranean healing traditions.
The entire plant, from the leaves to the seeds is considered a tonic for the body, mind, and spirit. Native to India, holy basil is considered in the Hindu tradition as the most sacred herb, often called the “Elixir of Life.” The common Indian name, Tulsi, means “The Incomparable One.”
It has a deep history of being used esoterically to harmonize the bio-energetic fields of the body. In yogic philosophy, it is one of a handful of herbs that is known for its ability to balance the sacred and healing energetic chakra system. It is a profoundly healing plant that singularly heals the body, mind, and spirit.
