Saw palmetto trees are commonly thought to be 500-700 years old, with some found to be even as old as 10,000 years!
The plant is slow-growing and has evolved to be fire-adapted. The leaves will burn, but new leaves will start growing within one week of a fire.
The leaves are not used medicinally, but the fruit and seeds are eaten and commonly used to make medicines.
Besides their well-known use for treating enlarged prostates, saw palmetto can also treat infertility, colds and flu, and a range of urinary ailments.
In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), they are known for Tonifying Jing (Essence) and Kidney Qi.
