Peony is famous the world over for its beautiful flowers. Besides their beauty, the petals are edible and the roots of Paeoniae lactiflorae are medicinal. White peony is the root with the bark removed to reveal the whitish interior and red peony is the same root with the outer reddish bark left intact. Both are used medicinally.

Both varieties of peony have long been valued in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for their ability to support Liver function and Calm Yang.

When Liver function is supported and Yang is calmed the emotions can settle down, anxiety is eased, and a person is better able to get a good night’s sleep.

White peony is also often used to counter the effects of Blood Deficiency caused by excessive use of draining herbs. It will be added to many formulas to help counter the effects of these kinds of herbs when you need to use them.
