There are over 300 species of skullcap. The two most commonly used are American skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) and Chinese skullcap (Scutellaria baicalensis), both of which aid sleep.
American skullcap is considered milder and best for soothing frayed nerves, countering stress, and helping you sleep. The Chinese version is considered stronger and best for treating conditions associated with Damp Heat, such as cold and flu symptoms, cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
- The herb Huang Qin (Scutellaria baicalensis) can be used to calm the fetus when Heat is causing the baby to be excessively restless. Caution during pregnancy is advised, as improper use can cause a miscarriage.
- American skullcap (aka Madweed) has long been used by Native Americans to help treat a variety of female disorders associated with menses
- While not generally used as a culinary herb, young skullcap leaves can be used in soups or salads, and the powdered root can be added to smoothies or dressings, adding an earthy flavor and powerful immune-boosting properties.
- A third common variety, S. barbatae, known as Ban Zhi Lian, is notably used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) for treating cancer.
