Schisandra is the herb the word “adaptogen” was created to describe. Scientists used the word to highlight schisandra’s synergistic and whole body tonifying properties. It is a powerful tonic for boosting the immune system, countering the effects of stress, and supporting liver, kidney, heart, lung, and digestive function.

It is famous in Oriental medicine for being one of the few herbs to taste like each of the five flavors: salty, sour, pungent, sweet, and bitter. These flavors are each associated with major bodily systems in 5 Phase Theory and indicate healing attributes themselves. For example, as in the West, bitter is associated with triggering and supporting a healthy digestive system. For a single herb to contain all five flavors is rare and points to schisandra’s powerful adaptogenic and tonic properties.
