Walnut / Hu Tao Ren / Juglans regia L. / J. nigra
Walnut trees are an inspiration. They are my favorite nut and an amazing tree full of healing medicine and magic. Many cultures consider walnut trees to be protectors of the spirit. Carry a walnut in your pocket and become fertile (physically or creatively).
The hull, shell, nuts, leaves, bark, and oil are all used.
Highly nutritious, walnuts and their oil are a store house of True Health.
They are THE most nutritious nut. AND they can be used to treat digestive issues, type 2 diabetes, diarrhea, scabies, and more!
Tea made from the leaves is antifungal. The astringent leaves are used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) to treat vaginal discharge and kill parasites.
The leaves, bark, and hulls can all help heal a variety of conditions including urinary tract infections, hives, sore throats, and constipation. Powdered dried walnut bark also makes a strong purgative infusion.
In TCM, walnuts Tonify the Kidneys, strengthening the low back and knees, supporting brain function (the nuts even look like the human brain), and helping the Kidneys Grasp Qi from Deficient Lungs causing chronic coughs, wheezing, and asthma.
China is one of the largest producers of walnuts. In the USA, the state of California produces 99% of the country’s English walnuts. (English walnuts are native to Greece, Persia, and the Himalayas. Black walnuts are native to North America.) English walnuts are less bitter than black walnuts and are most often cultivated for commercial walnuts.
Tinctures made from the old, withered, blackened hulls (versus the young green outer casings (hulls) that protect the hard, inner brain-like shell which in turn contains the walnut) are used to treat hypothyroidism, intestinal worms, acne, and skin infections. They have also been used to prevent sexually transmitted infections and malaria.
Walnut oil lowers cholesterol, and while not recommended for cooking, it is great for making salad dressings and drizzling on vegetables, pasta, and rice.
Walnuts are the oldest known food found on trees, dating back over 10,000 BC years.
In China a pair of matched walnuts are a highly prized gift, symbolizing Yin and Yang, longevity, health, and prosperity.
