In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), cacao is well known for its Warming and Kidney Yang-supporting properties. It also Tonifies the Heart. In the West, cacao is known for its bitter flavor, which promotes healthy digestion and, in turn, supports heart health. It can also be used to alleviate asthma symptoms and support the immune system.
Cacao has been cultivated by various cultures for over three thousand years in Mesoamerica. The earliest evidence of its use is traced back to the Mokaya people of Mexico and Guatemala. The Mayans and Aztecs both made chocolate beverages.
Several mixtures of cacao are described in ancient texts for ceremonial, medicinal, or culinary purposes. These mixtures included maize, chili, vanilla, and honey. It is believed that the Aztecs ground cacao and blended it with tobacco for smoking.
