“It’s walnut season and our kids, ages 3 and 5, have recently discovered this delicious nut. We were invited to a friends house to gather walnuts that had fallen off the tree. It was a wonderful afternoon treasure hut, finding every ‘gem’ possible, and gathering them into a bag. We brought home three large bags of walnuts. Ever since, we have had two bowls on our counter, one for the whole nut and one for shells. The kids have spent hours, literally, perfecting the art of cracking and picking out the walnut flesh. Initially, our three year old only enjoyed collecting and cracking the nuts. After about two weeks of having them around and some gentle suggestions about trying new foods, he stuck a small piece in his mouth, ready to spit it out. After two chews, he was hooked. ‘I love it, mom! I love walnuts!’ Needless to say, we have been going through the walnuts (we also give them as gifts), and are now purchasing them on a weekly basis from a local farmer. They’re only in season for so long!
“One night, as we sat around the kitchen, cracking and eating walnuts, talking about how much we loved them, we started wanting to know more. They obviously were doing our bodies good, we could feel it, but what exactly were they doing? I did a search one night after bedtime and came across WRI’s free Walnut PDF download. Perfect! Simple, visual, and a single page I could print! I printed it out and hung it on our kitchen wall. We’ve read it and referenced it numerous times, especially when friends come over. The kids love showing it to people and ‘showing off’ what they know. It’s a wonderful learning tool for us. We’ve download the rest of the herbal PDF’s and made a reference guide for the whole family. We can’t wait to add more herbs to our book! Thank you for providing such a fun and educational resource.”
